Beads tomorrow..

I must admit that I LOVE to hear what ya'll want - otherwise I would never have had Brian install his Blog for me...I'm laughing cause just when I think I have a bright idea (or even a borrowed idea) I find that its not the way to go...Steering this ship is definitely a combined effort - I don't always know the right way you want me to go, and while I'll occaisionally throw out an idea here or there, ya'll always let me know what way YOU'D prefer to go...and frankly I'd have it no other way...SOOO...scrap the auction idea, it'll be first come...I'm not sure when I'll post them, I plan to have plenty to offer, which means time to clean, shoot, etc...

I used the analogy when I was talking to Mandy, that when I offer the beads in my 'normal' style, it reminds me of everyone trying to squeeze through one small door - elbows flying, purses swinging, everyone turning red in the face trying to get through in time...whereas an auction seemed as though everyone could come in, take a few hours to look around, decide what they wanted and put a bid down..less pressure, less hurriedness, less squeezing...But I think my analogy (I am the Queen of Analogies, btw) must not be the way ya'll are thinking, so I shall bow to your will and do things as you request...after all, its EASIER for ME to just post the prices w/ the PayPal code and let ya'll scramble for the beads... so, next time I have another idea, I expect ya'll to speak up and tell me what you want, so I don't go zooming down the wrong path...'look out, low-flying donners ahead'...

I'm currently working on Pickings for ya'll, and I'm going to try something new and see if you like it...If you've ever visited Kim Miles site, you've seen how she offers her outstanding floral beads using a bidding system...The cool part of the system is that you can bid what you're comfortable paying (so no more 'I can't afford it' sadness) and you get 2 hours (!) in which to place your bids..so no more 'i didn't get to your page in time' crying...I'll post the rules (lets call them guidelines, rules are so unfun) and you'll have all day to figure out what to do..Its actually pretty easy, but anything new and different is always taxing...this will also make it easier for me to keep the beads updated, since my computer connection still drops intermittently and Time Warner is now blaming it on our router and not on their cable...It drops right when I'm trying to update sets that ya'll are buying fast and furiously and then I have to give 'sorry that's sold' refunds to you and it makes you sad...By bidding, you can tell me what you think the set is worth and there's no debate...$37.50? well, there ya go...

Kim has wonderful rules that I'm sure have come about from doing many of these auctions..(its the only way she sells beads on her site, I believe)...I don't want to just out and out copy her rules exactly, so I'll start out with rules for US and adjust them as needbe...(since I don't take credit cards, or have a secret club, those rules would not apply to us, of course)...So, read the Bidding Rules page and get familiar with it just so you know what to do...Its not going to be hard, but you might wonder about this or that...email me and I'll clarify (and probably post the info for everyone else) so we can get this down...

Yippee!! Sounds like too much fun. Looking forward. How many sets will you have :)??

OOOO - I hate those auctions! I personally like the set prices better. I always end up getting outbid at the last minute (happened just this week!)
Please don't change!!!

Hey Sherri, I hear ya babe...I won't do auctions forever, I just want to try something that gives everyone a chance, so that they aren't upset that they missed the time or the stuff was too high for them...but I realize that I can't please everyone, and I prefer just setting the prices and letting ya'll buy it if you like it too...that's why I do it that way most of the time...I think I'm gonna get complaints no matter what I do...I just start to feel guilty I guess...maybe I shouldn't...I dunno...therapy anyone?????

Hey Vanda (didn't mean to ignore you!)...I'm not sure of the exact number yet, I'm still working on them today..and I might find some other surprises to add in at the last minute, so I'm not sure yet...at least 5, and hopefully a LOT more...

Hmmmm, I for one like set prices better, then you can decide which set you like the most & is still available & go from there. I have bid on Kim's auctions & only once won one of them so I know they do work for me sometimes. My problem is that I like several sets, but concentrate on 1 or 2 of them & bid as high as I comfortably feel & end up losing them. Then come to find that 1 set I also liked sold for considerably less, but since my resources were going to another set I did not bid on it. I know you can't please everybody, but these are just my thoughts. I am willing to try out the new way of course though. - Jana

Jana's right about the problem of liking many sets and not being able to make a strong bid on all of them for fear of winning everything--an open bid system at least removes that problem. Basically everything that involves a bid will make someone who has less money unhappy, just as your other system makes those who weren't quick off the mark unhappy. No system's perfect--sigh.

Ok, now i'm having second thoughts...nearly all the feedback on this has been negative...would you just prefer that I post the beads and assign the prices that I want for them? (you might not like the prices, as they are going up - wheee, yet more things to dislike, rah rah)...What say you? (email or comments are fine)...it IS easier for me to just post the set and let ya'll duke it out, so if you like that system, we'll do that instead...

Well, *I've* never had a problem with the old system--even when I lose!

I have no right to an opinion....haven't bought a set yet, but drooled over PLENTY. The ONLY times I haven't been "too late" were when it was a set that weren't my style OR my pocketbook was empty!

BUT...I have stopped even looking at Kim Miles stuff, because I hate that auction format. Just do ebay if you have to auction, THAT we understand.

How about: 4 sets "buy it now or lose out" and a 5th set that is "raffled" off over 2 more days...you set price, we throw names in as willing to purchase at that price, if we "lose" on the quick sets, we have $$ to put our name in on the raffle...if we WIN the quick sets, we can just not throw our name in the raffle. AND the people with most $$ to bid won't get to hog it all, since price is same for all. Then the kitty pulls a name out of a pile, and they get first dibs (24 hrs) to buy raffle set.

It is totally not my business..just trying to help! :-) Nancy

I stopped going to Kim's site when she started auctions. I would much rather take my chances with set prices....just my humble opinion... Lise

I guess I'll toss my 2 cents in too...I too agree that auctions should be left to ebay. I find that auctions discourage a lot of people (like me) from bidding because they figure that someone with deeper pockets is going to win out in the end anyway. I'd rather see you keep your format the way that you have had it...and just put more stuff on ebay if you want to open up sets for auction. It's always disappointing to not get a set on your site because you didn't see it in time, but that's always easier to swallow than losing out because someone else was able to spend more.

I like set prices too but I also think you should do auctions as well because those are always fun even though I'm a bit of a hot head when I get outbid grrr... I hate that. :)

forgot to clarify that I meant I don't mind the auction every once in a while but not for all of the offerings.

Posted by: Marianna at February 17, 2005 06:10 PM

Well here's my two cents as well. Yeah, don't care much for that type of auction. I guess I like to get in and get out nice and easy with or without beads. With Ebay you can bid your highest price and not worry about it all day. With this type of auction I feel that there's more pressure to see what's going on. I miss out all the time on pickings because I work late and I'm two hours behind Miss Donna but I'm OK with it. I think it's up to you Donna, maybe you want to try it and just see how it goes. It's not like this is the last time you'll post beads on your site. This is only once in many to come!

My question is, how many of the people that don't want to try the "auction" are home all day and don't have a job or your job lets you use the computer whenever you want? I don't have either luxury so I was looking forward to the change of bead buying. I don't believe Donna was going to this style permanently, just trying something different. Next time she has a new idea, I'll be sure to post that I like it (if I do), since my being quiet made me loose out on this one. I was actually in bed last night thinking about this idea she had and was really looking forward to it. I wake up, read the home page and what a downer.
